Mad Fink Updates

I committed some updates to a ton of stuff I’ve been working on for the last week or two

PostgreSQL: I updated PostgreSQL to enable thread-safety, as well as applying a patch from Craig Struble to fix some problems in 7.3 and 7.4 co-existing. Java: I’ve been going through the Fink tree-comparison page to figure out what’s left for me to move over. I’ve moved a metric ton of the Java stuff I own (Jakarta Commons, and so on) as well as updating log4j, ant, and some other stuff that’s been out of date. There’s more to come, I want to get Tomcat4 and Tomcat5 in the 10.3 tree, still. KDE: I’m still working on KDE 3.3, it’s slowly getting there. There’s some problems in KDESDK and a few other things to get cleared up before I can start really testing for release to unstable. Share on Facebook

Mono 1.0 in the 10.3 Tree

I’ve got mono 1.0 in the 10.3 tree now, including monodoc, gtk#, gecko#, gtksourceview#, and libgdiplus. XSP is still crashy, so I’ve removed it for now, and monodevelop still doesn’t run either. Hopefully we’ll get those worked out shortly. KDE 3.3 is coming along nicely. Most of it is compiling, running into a few minor snags here and there but it’s runnable. I’ll post when I’ve got everything ready for those willing to dig into the experimental tree and give them a shot. 🙂

KDE 3.2.3 in unstable

I’ve put KDE 3.2.3 in Fink unstable (both 10.2-gcc3.3 and 10.3). It’s looking pretty solid, I’m gonna wait for some input and then I think it’s the first 3.2.x release that will be worth releasing to stable. Now it’s time to start packaging qt 3.3 and KDE 3.3 alpha.

Fink Updates

PostgreSQL 7.3.6 and 7.4.3 are in unstable in the 10.3 tree now; I’m testing in the 10.2-gcc3.3 tree at this moment and hope to release them there soon as well. I’ve got most of KDE 3.2.3 built and just need to do some spot-checking and last-minute cleanup of the packages. Mono has some stuff that’s broken that I’ve gotta figure out before I can release, but I think I’ve got all the pieces put together at least. I guess that’s about it. I’m glad to have the PostgreSQL thing out in the wild, I’m tired of messing with it. Of course, I’m sure there’ll be bug reports, but for the most part it should be better than what was there.

Week 1

So I’ve been unemployed for a week, as of 3 hours ago. =)

In Fink news, I’ve been working on entirely repackaging PostgreSQL 7.3, and packaging PostgreSQL 7.4, so that they can coexist (and so that the bugs in the 7.3 packages are fixed).

Other than that, it’s been all business. My resume has gone through a number of revisions (and will probably see more). I’ve applied for a number of jobs (including one at RedHat, phear). I’ve applied for individual insurance. I’ve applied for unemployment benefits. It’s crazy how busy you are when you’re out of a job. =)

I’ve gotten a bunch of pledges for doing development on Fink/KDE full-time, although nothing anywhere near a living wage, I’m sorry to say. I don’t really see how on-demand development would make that any different; especially since there are still big infrastructure things that would have to happen in all of KDE before there’s any specific features that could be worked on. It would be great to be able to do it full-time, but it seems unless I get a big benefactor, it wouldn’t be enough. Feel free to prove . . . → Read More: Week 1

Mono 1.0 Beta 1

I’ve got Mono 1.0 Beta 1 in 10.3 unstable now. It’s not in 10.2 because of some library-loading issues I haven’t worked out yet. This release includes gtk-sharp (which almost entirely works now!), and monodoc, the C#/mono/GTK# documentation browser. It also includes cairo and libgdiplus, which add the Mono.Cairo and System.Drawing APIs, respectively. I ran a buttload of the tests from gtk-sharp, screenshots are here. If you have any suggestions of apps to port to make sure things are generally working, let me know. =)

KDE 3.2.2 in Fink Unstable

I’ve got KDE 3.2.2 released to Fink unstable (both the 10.2-gcc3.3 and 10.3 trees) now. Please let me know if you have any issues, the only known problem is sound not working still. Woot!

Happy Birthday To Me

Well, today’s my birthday, the big 2-8. Cynthia sent me some flowers to work, they’re very nice! I also got Angel, seasons 1-3 from Dad & Patty… I’ve got lots of TV watching to catch up on. =) Going out to Maggiano’s tonight for dinner, assuming I’m not too sick to go (I had a 100-something fever last night, although I’m feeling quite a bit better now.) On the subject of things you people are coming here for (grin), I’m going to be working on packaging KDE 3.2.2 for Fink, it’s due out soon. I should have some time to work on it tomorrow evening, expect checkins to experimental soon. Also, I’d talked about working on gtk-sharp, according to the I give up / Mac OS X PPC support thread on the Mono discussion list, my best bet is to wait a bit. There is someone who is starting to actively work on the OSX/PPC port; most of the brokenness is known issues and just needs some time from Miguel’s team to get cleaned up. For now I’m going to hold off on working on it and come back when they get things . . . → Read More: Happy Birthday To Me

Yay!

I actually had KDE 3.2.1 ready the same day as the tarballs were released! =) The Fink announcement is here. The official KDE announcement is here. Let me know if you run into problems, this one seems stable enough that it might be worth moving to Fink stable. [Update:] Just a reminder, if you have problems, please don’t just post to the blog comments, e-mail me instead.

Sunday, Medium Rare Sunday

It’s a nice lazy Sunday afternoon. My roommate and I got a grill, we’re cookin’ up burgers, and it’s a nice 66 degrees outside. I’ve got an XFree86 4.4 package working, it seems to run really nice. It’s pending inclusion in unstable after we decide how we want to handle the licensing issue. The main question now is, do we stand with the other distros in not releasing 4.4 packages so that XFree86 is more likely to unkink their licensing, or do we release anyways (since it seems like, at least, there isn’t a conflict anymore)? Also, I’ve basically got KDE 3.2.1 done now. I’m finishing up the test builds on 10.3, but I see no reason it won’t be releasable to coincide with the tarball release from the KDE folks. I’ve got my KDE/Mac toolset put back together and I’m through kdelibs in building everything again (including an update to Qt 3.3.1, I’ve gotta get packages put together and up on the KDE binary page). Things are moving along in a generally forward direction, as mom would say. I’ll keep you posted when I get new KDE/Mac binaries together and ready for perusal.
